How Much Collagen Should You Take After 40? Why One Number Is Wrong
Pick up ten collagen tubs and you will find at least six different serving sizes, from 2.5 grams to 20. Read ten articles about it and you will get one number, stated with confidence, usually somewhere around 10 grams. The number changes depending on who is selling the tub.
Three published trials have done the thing those articles do not: given different groups different amounts and measured what happened. They do not agree on a single figure, and the way they disagree turns out to be the actual answer. In one, 2.5 grams a day was enough to change skin elasticity in women aged 35 to 55. In another, 15 grams produced no measurable effect on collagen synthesis at all, while 30 grams did.

Why there is no single correct dose
The question "how much collagen should I take" contains a hidden assumption: that collagen does one thing, so there is one amount of it that works. Neither half of that holds up.
Collagen has been tested against skin elasticity, wrinkle depth, bone density, tendon thickness, knee pain and muscle recovery. Those are different tissues turning over at wildly different speeds, measured by different instruments, over trials lasting anywhere from six hours to twelve months. A dose that shifts one has no obligation to shift another.
There is a second reason, and it is less obvious. Collagen peptides appear to work in two ways at once. Some of what you swallow is broken down into free amino acids and used as raw material, which is a straightforward quantity problem: more material, more available to build with. But short peptides containing hydroxyproline also survive digestion intact and reach the bloodstream, where they seem to act as a signal to the cells that build connective tissue. Signalling is not a quantity problem in the same way. A signal either registers or it does not.
That predicts something specific, and the trials bear it out. Outcomes driven by signalling respond at low doses. Outcomes needing bulk raw material do not move until the dose gets considerably larger. Both turn up below.
How much collagen per day for a woman: the skin evidence
The most directly relevant trial for this audience was published in Dermatology and Therapy in early 2026. It enrolled 119 healthy, sedentary women aged 35 to 55 and split them three ways: no supplement, 2.5 grams of collagen peptides a day, or 10 grams a day, for 12 weeks. Facial wrinkles, skin elasticity and skin hydration were all measured with instruments rather than questionnaires (Paula-Vieira et al., 2026).
Both doses improved skin elasticity and hydration against the control group. Elasticity reached significance at 2.5 grams (p < 0.0321) and more strongly at 10 grams (p < 0.0065). Hydration followed the same pattern, 2.5 grams at p < 0.0471 and 10 grams at p < 0.0037.
Wrinkles behaved differently. Only the 10 gram group showed a reduction in the number of wrinkles (p < 0.0002) and their length (p < 0.0424). At 2.5 grams, nothing.
That split is the useful finding. Elasticity and hydration are properties of the water-binding and fibre network in the upper dermis and they shift relatively quickly. A wrinkle is structural, the accumulated result of collagen loss deep in the dermis, and reversing any part of it asks for considerably more. Same tissue, same women, same 12 weeks, and the required dose was four times higher for the harder outcome.
What is wrong with this trial. The peptides were supplied by the manufacturer, the senior author has received consultation fees from that company, and two authors held fellowships funded by it. The control group was simply unsupplemented rather than given a matched placebo, which means expectation could account for part of the effect. Neither of those invalidates the dose comparison, since both supplemented groups had the same relationship with the sponsor and the same expectations, but the size of the effect against control should be read with that in mind.
The finding that breaks the 5 gram rule
Now the result that should change how you read every collagen label you own.
Researchers at Liverpool John Moores University ran a double-blind randomized crossover trial in which 10 resistance-trained men each took, on three separate occasions, either nothing, 15 grams of hydrolyzed collagen, or 30 grams, each with 50 mg of vitamin C, one hour before four sets of barbell back squats. Blood was drawn across the following six hours to measure PINP, a marker that rises when the body is building type I collagen (Lee et al., 2024).
The 30 gram dose raised collagen synthesis above the 15 gram dose (P = 0.013) and above nothing at all (P = 0.002). Glycine and proline in the blood rose accordingly.
The important number is the third comparison. Between 15 grams and zero grams, there was no statistically significant difference (P = 0.225). Fifteen grams of collagen peptides, taken with vitamin C exactly as the tendon protocols recommend, an hour before heavy resistance training, produced a collagen synthesis response the study could not distinguish from taking nothing.
Fifteen grams is more than most tubs recommend. It is three times the dose used in the 12 month bone density trial covered in the previous article in this series. And for this particular outcome, it did nothing.
What this trial does not tell you. Ten participants, all men, all young, all resistance-trained. It measured a single dose on a single day, not weeks of supplementation, and whole-body collagen synthesis rather than tendon specifically. It is a mechanism study, and mechanism studies routinely fail to predict outcomes over months. What it does establish is that dose matters enormously for this endpoint, and that the amount most people take sits on the wrong side of the line.
How much is too much
If more is better for some outcomes, the obvious next question is where to stop. Two answers, and neither is the one supplement marketing gives.
The first is nutritional rather than toxicological. Collagen is an incomplete protein, missing tryptophan entirely, so every gram of collagen that replaces a gram of complete protein in your day makes your overall amino acid intake slightly worse. Modelling of the standard American diet found that collagen could supply up to 36 percent of total daily protein while the diet still scored as high quality, and up to 54 percent while still scoring as good (Paul et al., 2019). For a woman eating 90 grams of protein a day, 36 percent is roughly 32 grams of collagen. That is the practical ceiling, and it is generous.
The second is that the published research simply stops. The same analysis noted that effective amounts across the collagen literature run from 2.5 to 15 grams a day. Trials above that are sparse, and the 30 gram result was a single acute dose, not a daily habit sustained for months. Taking 40 grams a day is not known to be harmful. It is unstudied, which is a different thing and should be described as such.
Digestive tolerance is the practical limit most people meet first. Collagen is well absorbed, but large single doses of any protein powder cause bloating in some people, and splitting the dose across the day tends to fix it.

Consistency beats precision. For most women over 40 taking collagen as a daily habit rather than for one specific endpoint, somewhere between 10 and 20 grams covers the evidence that exists, and the ceiling is roughly a third of your daily protein. Below 2.5 grams you are outside the range anything has been shown at. Above 30 grams you are outside the range anything has been studied at.

Ten grams a day is the most defensible single figure. Twenty grams is also reasonable and better supported for connective tissue. Two and a half grams is enough only if skin elasticity and hydration are all you are after.
Should I take it all at once or split it through the day?
For a general daily habit, either works, and splitting it helps if a large single dose bothers your stomach.
